ROASTERS CHALLENGE WINNING ROAST
In October, we took part in the Roasters Challenge, a competition organised by Helsinki Coffee Week, where Finland’s top roasters went head-to-head to see who could bring out the best flavour from the same coffee. Each roaster’s coffee was evaluated through blind tasting by fellow competitors, ensuring a fair and exciting challenge. This year, we were honoured to be awarded first place! 🥇
This year’s competition coffee was a specialty lot from Brazil’s Fazenda Capoeira farm, offered by Noordpoort coffee importers. We roasted it on our Stronghold S7Pro, aiming to highlight the coffee’s sweetness and delicate fruitiness.
Farmers Marisa and Gabriel Contreras left a career in the pharmaceutical industry to find a new passion in coffee farming. Their Fazenda Capoeira farm in Minas Gerais is dedicated to responsible, high-quality specialty coffee production.
The Capoeira farm cultivates Catuai, Catucaí, Mundo Novo, Rubi, and Topázio varieties, naturally pollinated by the farm’s own bees. This particular coffee is a pure Catucaí lot. During harvest, the ripe cherries are carefully separated using the floating method, and fermentation is closely monitored to ensure a clean and complex flavour profile. The beans are then sun-dried in stages until they reach the target moisture level of 10.7%.
Fazenda Capoeira is also known in the region for promoting female entrepreneurship. Marisa organises an annual event called Donas do Café, which brings together and supports women farmers in the region. This coffee is a tribute to passion, community and craftsmanship at its finest.
